Educational Development Responsibilities 2020-2022 (Parental leave from September 2021 to August 2022)
CapU Certificate for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
I have been tasked with envisioning and proposing a certificate for teaching and learning in higher education for Capilano University. To date I have completed a Canada-wide environmental scan, developed a framework, proposed the individual courses that will make up the certificate, and begun consultations. The aim is to launch the certificate in September 2021.
Faculty Supports for Academic Integrity (in collaboration with Jacqueline Clarke)
I have supported Jacqueline Clarke in her work on academic integrity resources, including developing a webpage for Faculty. I also sit on an academic integrity special interest group which includes faculty, librarians, and staff from student success. My goal in this area is to further develop the faculty webpage to guide faculty in making pedagogical decisions to prevent, detect, and respond to breaches of academic integrity.
Chair, Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee
The Teaching and Learning Advisory Committee provides a forum for discussion on the issues related to teaching and learning enhancement and a campus culture that recognizes, promotes, and celebrates effectiveness in teaching and learning. Advice and recommendations are provided to the Centre for Teaching Excellence, the Senate Subcommittee on Teaching and Learning, the Educational Technology Advisory Committee, and the University as a whole as appropriate. The committee consists of faculty, a CTE representative (myself) and a student representative.
As we have been unable to recruit a representative from Indigenous Education and Affairs, we have committed to spending time each meeting to share resources or have a discussion regarding decolonization and indigenization in order to self-educate with the intention of taking up those perspectives in our work as a committee.
Open Classroom Weeks (in collaboration with Bettina Boyle)
I was invited to work with Bettina on the teaching squares program, however due to low registration, I suggested taking up an Open Classroom model in which instructors from across campus invite and welcome guests into their classes with the intention of self-reflection. The event was held over one week in Fall 2020 with 20 participants and over two weeks in Spring 2021 with 21 participants. Future adjustments to the program will include removing the opening and closing workshops, while still creating space for connection and reflection.
Participant comments:
“Great way to get inspired and learn!”
“I liked being able to see all the creativity that's gone into online course design from all my colleagues.”
“I love connecting with and learning from my colleagues.”
“It was great to see how the instructor created a comfortable online classroom and created a sense of community - from the activities used to the way they facilitated discussion and anonymous feedback or questions.”
“So good to be part of a community of instructors wanting to improve”
“I also enjoyed Open Classroom as an opportunity to build relationship.”
Program Development and Renewal (in collaboration with Bettina Boyle)
In collaboration with Bettina and in partnership with Academic Initiatives and Planning, I have consulted on processes and materials for program development and renewal at CapU. This has also included consultations with program review working groups and program development working groups.
Consultations
My consultations with faculty have been more limited as a new and then returning member of the CTE, however I have consulted individually with faculty on rubrics, conducting SoTL research, and program development.
